Ecco Shoes Review: We tried out the Danish footwear brand

ecco danish design

Although I only tested two of the brand’s mens footwear offerings, Ecco creates a wide range of men’s footwear options including dress and casual shoes, sandals, hiking shoes, sneakers, and golf shoes. The brand also carries a range of styles in women’s sizes, including dress shoes with low heels, sneakers, and more. Additionally, the brand also offers stylish footwear options in children’s sizes, meaning Ecco is a one-stop-shop for the entire family, no matter what your family looks like. The Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker is a comfortable pair of stylish sneakers. The design of the shoe features a mix of textiles that allow your feet to feel comfortable, protected, and light no matter the terrain.

News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world. Also displayed around the exhibition space were examples of polyurethane-cast seating and leather objects created by Ecco collaborators. During the workshops, visitors could customise panels and sheets of organic light pink leather developed by Ecco.

The timeless quality, unpretentious and affordable designs set Baughman at the forefront of the California Modern movement. Approachable, elegant designs and clean shapes are some ways to describe mid-century modern furniture designer, Milo Baughmans’, pieces. His collaboration with various companies created what we know today as California Modern during the mid 20th Century.

Even on longer walks, my feet felt well supported, and best of all, there was no break-in period. While the leather feels tough, I get the impression that they will soften over time. During their three years in business, Zendoo has experienced steady growth, and today approximately 9 people work for the design business. None of the employees work even close to full time, but even though the company has a production line to keep up, the two entrepreneurs find a way to make room for the newcomers on their terms. Many of the employees sew leather and textile products, while others are occupied in the company’s kitchen to prepare lunch for their colleagues. The startup business even has its own job consultants who bridge Zendoo with regular companies and pave the way for permanent jobs to employees who are ready to be part of a regular company.

Zendoo’s products are handmade from e.g. surplus leather from ECCO’s production. It is a diverse group that fills the company’s production room in Kolding. Many young people feel the increasing pressure from society to perform, and some of them fall under the pressure and end up as a number in the statistics. But emotional pain can strike anyone at any given time, and the Danish design company opens the doors to all kinds of people. ECCO’s designer Ejnar Truelsen created the “JOKE”, followed by a series of other revolutionary shoes, some of which are still in production. ECCO owns tanneries in the Netherlands, Thailand, Indonesia and China.

Birte and Karl Toosbuy’s dream to create a shoe company driven by Danish Design and the philosophy of form follows function. Born in Goodland, Kansas, Milo Baughman and his family moved to California shortly after his birth. At 13, he contributed to the design of his family home in Long Beach, California. As an adult, Baughman joined the Army Air Force during World War II where he gained more experience designing officers’ clubs.

Read excellent ratings about our products, customer service, quality, and shipping. The new design studio in Shanghai is ECCO’s second, following the establishment of a studio in Brooklyn, New York, in 2021. In addition to focusing on footwear and bag design, both studios serve as a playground for creatives to connect, collaborate, learn, teach, and inspire. See our Milan design week 2024 guide on Dezeen Events Guide for information about the many other exhibitions, installations and talks that took place throughout the week. The workshop was organised by Ecco in collaboration with its material innovation wing Ecco Leather and its At Kollektive fashion collaborations initiative.

Daily updates on the latest design and architecture vacancies advertised on Dezeen Jobs. This video was produced by Dezeen for Ecco as part of a partnership.

And eventually, this happens to the vast majority of Zendoo’s employees. ECCO was established in 1963 by Karl Toosbuy in the small town of Bredebro in southern Denmark. Throughout the 1980s, the company expanded its operations internationally.

In 1998 the first flagship retail store opened on Oxford Street, in London. By 2000, ECCO owned every step of the production process, from design and leather production to branded retail sales. While I enjoyed wearing the Citytray dress shoe and found it to be as comfortable as comparable dress shoes that I have owned previously, my only qualm with this shoe is that they felt slightly oversized. I suspect I would have been just fine with a sample a half size or full size down from my usual size.

The workshop took place as a part of Material Matters, an exhibition hosted by the footwear and lifestyle brand at cultural space and design store 10 Corso Como. Fresh contemporary style with well-lit, open, and connected areas. In every way, the design concept of ECCO’s new studio space in Shanghai oozes collaboration and creativity. The studio houses a design hub of ECCO designers whose primary aspiration is to contribute to ECCO’s collections from the buzzing metropolis that is Shanghai. Zendoo is privately owned and runs on revenues from their production combined with public funds.

Hill had strong opinions about how his house should be built and he closely monitored the progress of construction. Learn about James J. Hill’s influence on the region and about his network of family members, servants, workers, and guests. Marvel at the impressive house details such as chandeliers, stained glass, and hand-carved woodwork sprawled throughout the home. Some locations, including the attic and gate house are not wheelchair accessible. The two-story art gallery was built for Hill's magnificent art collection, consisting mainly of Barbizon School of mid-19th century landscape painters. Retractable iron grilles on the windows and doors provided security for the collection and the family's other valuable possessions.

Guided explorations of the mansion and inquiry-based activities will highlight stories from both the Hill family and their domestic employees, with an emphasis on comparing and contrasting past and present. After James J. Hill died in 1916 and his wife died in 1921, the children eventually moved out. In 1925, four of the daughters purchased the house from the estate and donated it to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

It even had a pipe organ, installed after someone suggested to Hill that other wealthy people had pipe organs in their homes. The house had a hybrid system of gas and electric lighting, with rotary switches on the walls to turn on the electric lights. However, there were no electrical outlets installed, because during that era electricity was only used for lighting. The woodwork in the house is very intricate, with hand-carved woodworking in the central hallway, the formal dining room, and the music room. Other rooms in the house, particularly on the second floor where most of the family members lived, do not have hand carved woodwork, but the woodwork is still richly colored and nicely detailed. To go with the hand carved woodwork in the formal dining room, there was also gold leaf plate on the ceiling.

There are also numerous festivals and events throughout the year, catering to a wide range of interests. For those who love the outdoors, the area's parks, lakes, and trails provide endless recreational opportunities. Take a 75-minute guided tour of the National Historic Register home of railroad baron. Guides will highlight artifacts and fixtures in the home with personal stories from the Hill family and domestic workers.

Nooks and Crannies Tour

The mansion cost a total of $931,275, the most expensive house in Minnesota when it finished, and the largest in the state as well. In 1925, the mansion was given to the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and for the next 50 years, it served as an office building, school, and residence for the church. The structure became a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and in 1978 the Minnesota Historical Society purchased the house with funding from the federal government and the Minnesota Legislature. The first floor, in addition to the art gallery, music room, hall, and formal dining room previously mentioned, also had a library, a drawing room, and Mr. Hill's home office.

The Boston firm of Peabody, Stearns, and Furber, which was known for its impressive mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, designed a massive Richardsonian Romanesque style mansion, then very much in fashion. The final cost totaled $931,275.01 including construction, furnishings, and landscaping for the three-acre estate. In 1978, the Archdiocese transferred the mansion to the Minnesota Historical Society, which preserved the building and developed educational activities. Since then, the house has been open to the general public for tours, interpretive programs, and special events.

From stunning Victorian architecture to notorious gangsters, Saint Paul's history is worth exploring. The fourth floor features a stage in a room that could seat 200 people, a grand piano, and gymnastic equipment. The Archdiocese transfers the house to the Minnesota Historical Society for $250,000 for the purposes of historic preservation and cultural programming. Family members purchase the mansion from the Hill estate and gift it to the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. For over fifty-three years, its spaces are used as offices, classrooms, and housing. She moves with her husband, Erasmus Lindley, across the street to the Horace P. Rugg house at 251 Summit.

2024 Best Places to Live in the Minneapolis-St Paul Area

james j hill house st paul minnesota

The home served as the center for the public and private lives of the Hill family for the next 30 years. Children grew up in the house, and four daughters had their weddings in the large drawing room. Newlyweds often lived in the enormous house until their own homes were completed, five of which were close by on Summit Avenue. Hill bought three lots on Summit Avenue in 1882, during an era when wealthy citizens were scrambling to build fashionable homes in the neighborhood. The street offered a commanding view of downtown St. Paul and the Mississippi River area, making it a highly desirable location. The family previously lived in the Lowertown area in St. Paul, near Ninth and Canada streets.

Buzzers under the dining room tables allowed Mary Hill to discreetly summon waitresses during a meal. Thirteen bathrooms featured state-of-the-art plumbing, with hot and cold running water. An elaborate ventilation system, which included twenty-two fireplaces, ensured that air moved freely throughout the house. The house’s total cost, including furnishings and other expenses, came to $931,275.01. By the late 1870s, James Hill’s growing fortunes and family required a larger home that reflected his elevated status within the community. Hill, his wife, Mary, and their children had moved through several homes over the years, mostly in the Lowertown neighborhood of St. Paul.

Holidays on the Hill

The second floor contained Mr. and Mrs. Hill's rooms, two guest rooms, and rooms for their five daughters, Gertrude, Rachel, Clara, Ruth, and Charlotte. The third floor contained rooms for their sons James, Walter, and Louis (who later succeeded his father as president of the Great Northern Railway). It also had a room that served as a gymnasium and school room for the children, as well as quarters for the servants. In summary, the Minneapolis, MN metro area is a place with a rich history and a strong sense of community.

Hours and Admission

The mansion was home to the Saint Paul Diocesan Teachers College from 1927 to 1951. It housed various educational programs run by the nearby College of St. Catherine and administrative offices for the Archdiocese. The second floor was where James, Mary, and their daughters had their bedrooms.

The house could be seen from the front on Summit Avenue, and from the back along the river and from downtown St. Paul. Unlike most neighboring homes, the Hills’ house featured finished facades on both its front and back. New residents should be prepared for the cold winters that come with heavy snowfall, as well as the hot, humid summers. It's important to have the right clothing and gear for the changing seasons. When it comes to voting, the Minneapolis metro area tends to lean towards progressive and liberal ideologies.

Hill oversaw the planning, construction, and furnishing of the house as if it were a new branch of the railroad. He rejected stained-glass window designs by Tiffany and Company, saying they were "anything but what I want," and even replaced the architects when they ignored his orders to the stonecutters. He instructed his Boston interior design firm Irving and Casson to finish the project. Their work included a large number of custom furniture pieces on the first and second floors. In 1925, family members donated the house to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

As new warehouses and railroad tracks crowded the Lowertown residential area, and as Hill's collection of paintings and sculpture overflowed the house, the Hill family thought it was desirable to move. Hill also realized that recent improvements in home technology, such as electric lighting, plumbing, ventilation, and fireproofing, could be incorporated into a new home. Moreover, since Hill was becoming a socially prominent person in the community, a new home would stand as a tribute to his status as the "Empire Builder". Once slated for demolition, the iconic City House is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The City House facility, formerly know as the Saint Paul Municipal Elevator and Sackhouse, has been restored as a park pavilion and interpretative center situated on piers and cantilevered out over the Mississippi River. Located in downtown Saint Paul at Mill St. and Walnut St. along the Sam Morgan Regional Trail, the facility offers beautiful views of the Mississippi River and the downtown skyline.

When the house was completed in 1891, it was equipped with the most advanced technologies of the day. Built during the transition between gas and electric lighting, the house was designed to include both. For security, windows and doors were wired to an annunciator system that would ring an alarm in the houseman’s room if they were opened unexpectedly.

The church used it for the next fifty-three years as space for offices, residences, and a teacher's college for women. The church preserved it well and did not make any significant alterations, although most of the original furniture was sold during this period. In 1961, the United States Department of the Interior designated the house a National Historic Landmark. The Minnesota Historical Society acquired the house in 1978, after the Archdiocese consolidated its offices elsewhere.

Costa Pacifica Cruise: Expert Review 2023

costa cruise ship

This can result in fluctuating numbers of passengers, particularly for English speakers. On our sailing, all four of our pre-booked shore excursions were cancelled due to lack of English participants. Generally speaking, only one excursion -- and often none -- were available in English, despite the website's assurance that all excursions are offered in a multitude of languages. With the average cruise aboard Costa Toscana lasing a week in duration, passengers have their work cut out for them if they want to make it to all 21 of Costa Toscana's different dining venues onboard. Dancing and music are also held nightly in the classy Leonardo Gran Bar on Deck 6, a massive venue reminiscent of the large single-story shipboard lounges of the 1990's. Spanning the entire width of the vessel, this cozy nightspot decked out in wood tones and blues is the place to see and be seen for the dancing set.

Cabins on Costa Toscana Are Superbly Designed

Via the partnership, Costa made ITA its "preferred air carrier" for fly-cruises (flight+cruise packages) to medium- and long-range travel destinations served by Costa ships. The deal was signed by Mario Alovisi (Costa's VP Revenue Management) and Emiliana Limosani (ITA's CCO). In mid-September 2021 Costa signed a partnership deal with Caffe Vergnano the "Made in Italy" espresso beverages and coffee-based delicacies fleetwide. The iconic Italian coffee company was founded in 1882 as a family business (by Domenico Vergnano) and is still run by the Vergnano family. Vergnano's sales in 2020 were EUR 80,6 million (~USD 94,5M / ~GBP 68,8M).

Unique to Costa Pacifica are cruising's first-ever recording studio (more on this below) and a "music maestro," who oversees the unusual-for-Costa enrichment opportunity. In this case, passengers can learn how to play piano, guitar and drums during their time onboard. In summer 2024, Fascinosa offers 7-day roundtrips to Malta and the Greek islands, and 2-week roundtrips to the Canaries, while Favolosa and Diadema operate in Northern Europe. Favolosa has 3 different itineraries (out of Hamburg) visiting Nordkapp/North Cape, the Lofotens, Iceland, and Greenland.

The Caribbean-deployed Costa ships Fortuna and Fascinosa offer two alternating one-week itineraries (each) that can be combined into two-week B2Bs. Costa Fortuna will exclusively sail between the Lesser Antilles, with itineraries featuring destinations such as Guadeloupe, Tortola, St Marteen, Antigua, St Lucia, Martinique, and Trinidad-Tobago. Costa Fascinosa's itineraries explore Dominicana (La Romana, Amber Cove, Samana, Catalina Island), Jamaica (Ocho Rios), Grand Turk, St Lucia, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Antigua, BVI/British Virgin Islands. The Mediterranean-deployed Costa Toscana offers 7-day voyages to Italy, France, Spain, and the Balearic Islands. The schedule features extended port stays (10+ hours) at each call port - Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Palermo, and Civitavecchia/Rome. For summer 2024 (June 7th to September 13th), Costa Fortuna departs on Fridays from Piraeus-Athens to Istanbul and the Greek islands (Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini).

In spring and fall 2024, 3-day and 4-day Western Mediterranean mini-cruises are scheduled for Fascinosa and Pacifica. Costa ships' fresh-made mozzarella, as well as other onboard-made traditional Italian cheese specialties, can be ordered from the special "Goccialatte" menu available in the Costa Cruises' signature pizzerias "Pummid'oro". The company is most infamous for the sinking of the cruise ship Costa Concordia off the island of Isola del Giglio in January 2012. The first voyages were between Italy and South America on the ship Anna C. These voyages were not the same sort of cruises on offer as today, they were regular ocean liner voyages like between Southampton and New York. Using a true cruise travel specialist, with years of experience selling ocean and river cruises, can offer numerous advantages that save you both time and money while providing a truly carefree vacation where all your needs have been anticipated and provided for.

In December 2019, Costa debuted Costa Smeralda and became the second cruise line to operate a cruise ship fully powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), following AIDA's AIDAnova one year earlier.[23] Costa Smeralda was joined by her sister LNG ship, Costa Toscana, in 2021. Cruise Radio prioritizes well-balanced cruise news coverage and accurate reporting, paired with ship reviews and tips. Costa Cruises was not immune to ships being sold during the cruise industry shutdown, as Carnival Corporation offloaded a couple of its older ships to raise money to remain operational. Costa Diadema was the first ship in the industry to introduce a guest-relations robot, which can speak in three languages – Italian, French, and English. It was also one of the first ships in the world to offer mozzarella cheese made on board.

The Italian attitude extends to entertainment and the genial party atmosphere onboard. In the evenings, there are up to seven different dance venues to choose from, playing everything from Italian favorites and dance standards to Latin and Euro-pop. Entertainment staff, known as "animators," lead line dances and conduct wacky events like the "Mr. Costa Contest," which includes a partial striptease by contestants. Costa Cruises was founded back in 1854 and whilst now they are a fully owned subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (alongside Holland American Line, P&O Cruises and others) they initially started off as a shipping line that operated cargo ships. Costa cruises around the world were cancelled in March 2020 due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

Staterooms are thoughtfully designed across the board, with vibrant colors, unique design accents, and comfortable furnishings. A great departure from the bland palette North American cruise lines rely on, our Balcony Stateroom included no less than three shades of blue; two shades of orange and red; and not an earth tone to be found. For those looking for a truly European-style cruise experience, Costa Toscana delivers, offering a gracious vessel that is capable of appealing to North American and international cruisers alike. Playstation World, in a small room off the casino, offers passengers a chance to play various games in a public setting. On nice evenings, there are even Playstation events in the Calypso pool area, which has a huge television screen. Some Costa Pacifica features and amenities that may seem pretty avant-garde and exciting to first-time Costa travelers are already cornerstones of Costa's newer ships.

Shorts and tank tops are banned from the dining room in the evenings, though. Ship staff make a real effort to accommodate various nationalities when it comes to announcements, excursions, entertainment, menus and signage. Major announcements are made in Italian, English, French, Spanish and German -- and there are designated hosts who conduct separate passenger orientations in those languages as well. Many staff are multilingual, instantly hopping from one language to another. On the downside, repetition of info in multiple languages can get tedious. With rebooking, all affected bookings received full refunds (100%) in FCC (future cruise credit), including on prepurchased through Costa Cruises packages and services.

It allows for more diverse itineraries than much larger ships that can’t navigate the Panama Canal. Costa Fortuna’s interior design was a tribute to the grand transatlantic liners of the early 20th century. The art deco details and vintage travel posters will bring you back in time.

On October 4, 2021, was officially introduced (on Smeralda) the company's new logo design. The sister brands Costa and CCL-Carnival Cruise Line are currently ranked the world's cheapest. Costa is also ranked "best" for Mediterranean itineraries and among the best travel brands for families, ruling in Southern Europe with its "Italian Style Cruising". Costa Cruises is a very popular Italian line with Italians and international passengers. Whilst the international language of seafarers is English, Costa Cruises is primarily an Italian-speaking cruise line. There are dedicated English-speaking crew, but most announcements will be in Italian.

Ryder Cup is a 1927-established men's golf championship (biennial) between European and American teams. Through this partnership, on Costa Smeralda was introduced the new "Cruise & Golf" package (available since May 2022). In mid-October 2021, Costa and ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo SpA/state-owned airline, Italy's flag carrier, fka Alitalia) signed an LoI (letter of intent) for joint commercial initiatives promoting new products and services.

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. The ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. On 27 February 2012, Costa Allegra suffered an engine room fire and went adrift in the Indian Ocean. After several days adrift without power, the ship was towed to the Seychelles island of Desroches, but was unable to dock there.

The ship attracts lots of passengers sailing with groups of friends and family, so most tables in the restaurants are large; there are only a handful of two-tops. Following the company's review of the shipboard food service and food processing, it decided to remodel both with a new sustainability approach, engaging all passengers and crew in responsible consumption. It was estimated that this program engages nearly 2 million passengers per year, plus around 19,000 crew. With this new food product, Costa became the world's first cruise company serving its passengers a fresh-made mozzarella. The shipboard-made mozzarella is produced by a Comat-manufactured steam machine (powered by electricity) that uses the curd of cow and buffalo milk sourced from Salerno's Piana del Sele area.
